- Severe coughing causes the child to make a whooping sound or to turn blue or red in the face.
- Difficult or rapid breathing.
- Yellowish skin or eyes.
- Redness of the eye, noticeable discharge, matted eyelashes, burning, itching.
- Untreated infected skin patches.
- Unusual spots or rashes.
- Unusually dark urine and/or gray or white stool.

When a child is ill and needs to be sent home, the child will be isolated in the administrator’s office or a quiet corner of the classroom and discharged once the parent arrives. (S)he may not return until 24 hours after the symptoms are gone. A doctor’s note is required.
The ODJFS Communicable Disease Chart is posted in the St. Elias office and the St. Stephens foyer. Parents will receive immediate notification when their child exhibits signs or symptoms of illness via a telephone call. A note will be posted on the Parent Board if children have been exposed to a communicable disease. If your child contracts a communicable disease when not in attendance at school, please notify us anyway so that other parents are aware.
